Everyone Loves a Rainbow!

What’s Involved:

Everyone Loves a Rainbow! is a one-hour live science experience exploring how colour and light play around in the world we see!

We’ll uncover the colours hidden inside white light, investigate why bubbles shimmer with rainbows, and use ultraviolet light to reveal glowing surprises normally hidden from view.

Then you’ll get your hands into it.

With glowing jars, giant bubbles, optical effects and tactile investigations, Everyone Loves a Rainbow lets you stick your hands straight into the science behind why things glow, shimmer, disappear and change colour.

And, there’s some squishy stuff, too.

What to Expect:

This experience combines presenter-led demonstrations and audience participation, letting you get up close and hands-on with the science.

Some demonstrations are performed solely by a trained Smiley Science professional, while other explorations allow us to bring volunteers or the wider group into the action.

In Everyone Loves a Rainbow! you’ll get to:

• Reveal the rainbow hidden inside white light

• ‘Paint’ with lasers

• Explore the science of fluorescence, phosphorescence and chemiluminescence

• Discover how bubbles create shifting rainbow colours

• Get hands-on with colourful, squishy and optical materials

• Take part in an edible-science investigation, where suitable

The demonstrations, activities and audience participation are adjusted to suit the age group, venue, and type of event.

Everyone Loves a Rainbow! works best in a darkened room.

Who is it for?

Everyone Loves a Rainbow! is one of our most sensory science experiences, and is suitable for adults, children, and any mixture of ages together! We adapt our science content and hands-on activities to our audience, and the Experience can be made to fit into most indoor performance environments.

Practical Details:

• Duration: Approximately 1 hour.

• Performance space: A clear area of approximately 3 × 3 metres.

• Set-up access: Approximately 30 minutes set-up time beforehand, access to power, and the ability to reduce the room lighting.

• Pack-down access: Approximately 20 minutes pack-down time afterwards — but we’re always happy to stick around and kōrero about the science.

• To make the experience as exciting as possible, the set-up and pack-down access must be uninterrupted, with the performance area kept clear of guests during those periods.

• Please note: Everyone Loves a Rainbow! includes ultraviolet lasers, and edible-science activity may also be included. Please let us know about any allergies or dietary requirements at time of booking, or get in touch and ask us a question.
