Whoosh!

What’s Involved:

Whoosh! is a one-hour live science experience exploring the invisible stuff that keeps us alive: air!

We’ll witness the crushing weight of the atmosphere, shoot fog vortices across the room, and explore how moving air can lift, carry and spin objects!

Then we’ll add some fire.

With vacuum chambers, floating bubbles, flames and other large-scale demonstrations, Whoosh! brings you the science in the air surrounding us.

And you’ll learn something cool along the way, too.

What to Expect:

This Experience combines presenter-led demonstrations and audience participation, weaving the science right into the fun.

Some demonstrations are performed solely by a trained Smiley Science professional, while others allow volunteers or the wider group into the action.

In Whoosh! you’ll get to:

• See the pressure of the atmosphere crush metal

• Discover what happens to objects when pressure is removed

• Fire fog-filled vortex rings across the room

• Experiment with bubbles, streamers and moving air

• Watch flames twist into a fire tornado

• Finish with a massive WHOOSH!

The demonstrations and audience participation are adjusted to suit the age group, venue, and type of event.

Who is it for?

Whoosh! is suitable for adults, children aged eight and above, and any mixture of ages together! We adapt our science content to our audience, and Whoosh has been designed to be suitable in most indoor environments.

Practical Details:

• Duration: Approximately 1 hour.

• Performance space: A clear area of approximately 3 × 3 metres.

• Set-up access: Approximately 30 minutes set-up time beforehand and access to power.

• Pack-down access: Approximately 20 minutes pack-down time afterwards — but we’re always happy to stick around and kōrero about the science.

• To make the experience as exciting as possible, the set-up and pack-down access must be uninterrupted, with the performance area kept clear of guests during those periods.

• Please note: Whoosh! contains fire, fog, sudden effects, and some loud sounds. Ear defenders are available for audience members.
